Choose a complete device with evidence against the final UK specification, check the property and electrics, follow its instructions and register it. Do not improvise the connection.
Ask for the exact evidence
- The manufacturer, model and precise kit contents, including its approved UK connection lead.
- Conformity evidence identifying Interim Product Specification version 2.
- Network type-test information for the actual inverter and configuration.
- UK instructions including permitted mounting arrangements and installation heights.
- Support details and warranty terms for each component.
A socket is not permission to modify the electrics
Use the supplied lead as instructed. The IPS requires warnings against extension leads, multiway adaptors, travel adaptors and plug-in RCD adaptors. Do not replace a European plug or make a generator lead.
If a suitable socket or circuit is missing, or the wiring is damaged, old or unfamiliar, get advice from a qualified electrician first. Outdoor sockets and circuit protection must suit the device instructions and applicable guidance.
Mounting matters as much as the inverter
A panel can be heavy and catches wind. Use mounting approved for the location, substrate and exact panel. Do not assume a railing, roof covering or shed can safely carry extra loads.
Respect the manufacturer’s maximum installation height and wind restrictions. Keep escape routes clear. If safe access or secure fixing is uncertain, use a competent professional.
One household, one plug-in device
The specification’s circuit limit is not the only limit. Ofgem’s G98 modification restricts connection to one plug-in device per customer installation. Existing hardwired generation also needs checking.
The decision permits operation alongside permanently wired microgeneration within the aggregate G98 limit; above that, G99 requirements apply. Ask the original installer or DNO to assess the combination.
Registration and ongoing care
Connection and decommissioning must be notified to the distribution network operator. Keep the product details and registration record. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for inspection, testing, isolation and maintenance.
