The current specification excludes plug-in batteries and solar devices integrated with battery systems. Adding a battery is not covered by the new British socket connection route.
The scope is explicit
The final Interim Product Specification covers solar-only devices. It expressly excludes plug-in battery systems and plug-in solar PV devices integrated with battery systems.
A product can have a real European market and useful technical features without qualifying for this particular UK route. An 800W label does not resolve the distinction.
Three different situations
- Solar-only compliant plug-in device: the new route may apply, subject to all product and installation conditions.
- Socket-connected solar-and-battery or battery-only device: the current IPS does not provide the route.
- Professionally designed permanently connected battery: separate electrical and network requirements apply.
What if the home already has a battery?
Adding generation means considering the combined installation. Ofgem’s decision addresses aggregate microgeneration capacity and the applicable network route.
Ask the original installer to assess compatibility, metering and control behaviour. Do not assume surplus from every plug-in kit will automatically charge every existing battery.
Portable power stations are another category
A portable power station may supply suitable appliances through its own outlets, following its instructions. That does not make it suitable for feeding a home circuit through a wall socket.
Never improvise a lead to backfeed a socket. For home backup, ask for a designed installation with the necessary isolation and protection.
If most of your demand is after sunset
Use conservative self-consumption assumptions before choosing a solar-only kit. A professionally installed battery may address a different need.
Future standards may change, but a product launch is not evidence of a change in the rules. We will date any regulatory update and link its source.
