Choosing a system

Choosing a safe solar panel mount

How to compare ground, wall, roof and railing mounting without improvising the structure.

The short answer

Choose a mounting arrangement approved for the exact panel, position and exposure. Weight alone does not prove stability: wind, fixings, structure and safe access all matter.

Start with the location, not the bracket

Measure the usable area, note the surface or structure and look at wind exposure, shading and access. Then compare the product instructions with that real location.

What to ask the seller for

  • Approved mounting options for the exact panel.
  • Maximum installation height and wind limitations.
  • Required fixings or ballast calculations.
  • Panel weight and assembled dimensions.
  • Instructions for inspection and safe removal.

Four warning signs

An improvised frame, an unassessed railing, loose paving slabs or a cable route across a walkway should stop the purchase until the arrangement is properly resolved.
